Event Date: Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 9:30am
Canoe or kayak Wekiva River starting and ending at Wekiva Island in Longwood (1014 Miami Springs Drive).
Basic rental fees (for the entire day) are $30 per canoe ($15 per person), $30 per single kayak, and $35 for a double kayak. Or, if you have your own boat, launch your own for only $6.
We will canoe upstream as a group for an hour and then back downstream to Wekiva State Park for a lunchtime picnic (please note that there is a $1 per person entrance fee for the state park). During our lunch break, we plan to enjoy the park's natural spring for swimming.
Please bring a towel, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, water proof shoes (that will stay on your feet and not float away in the river). Also, we recommend that you keep a change of clothes and an extra towel in your car if needed for the drive home.
There is a small store at Wekiva Island and another one in the state park but options are limited. So, plan to pack your own lunch/cooler and you should enclose your keys, phones, cameras, and food in watertight storage bags (such as a freezer-rated Ziploc bag).
Sign up in the Pathfinders class or email Meena and provide the name of your canoe partner (if no preference is given, teams of 2 or 3 will be assigned based on availability). Since canoe & kayak rentals are first come, first served, please be on time.
